Fargo police warn of phone scam involving fake utility accountFARGO – Police here are warning residents about a telephone scam in which the caller poses as a representative of a local utility company.
A man told police he was contacted Tuesday by a caller who demanded money for payment on a utility account.
The caller instructed the victim to purchase a prepaid money card and turn over the card’s number so the money could be transferred from the card, according to a news release from Lt. Joel Vettel.
The victim complied with the demands and lost approximately $500.
Vettel said police have seen similar fraudulent attempts in the past. He reminded the public to be cautious in financial situations where the only contact is by phone and requires payment through a money transfer service such as Moneygram or Western Union.
