West Fargo upends Davies in boys hoops

FARGO – The goal on Friday night’s game for the West Fargo boys basketball team was to play better than it had on Tuesday.

That goal was accomplished after the Packers scored a 69-45 Eastern Dakota Conference road victory over Fargo Davies.

Senior center Derek Hogenson posted a

game-high 25 points and 13 rebounds to pace West Fargo (7-4, 7-4 EDC).

The Packers who hit the court Friday appeared to be nothing like the team that suffered a 79-53 loss to North Dakota Class A, No. 2-ranked Fargo Shanley on Tuesday.

“The defense at the beginning is what got us into it,” said Hogenson, who is

6-foot-5 and finished 10 of 15 from the field on Friday. “Coming into the game we knew we had to get this win. Our last two home games didn’t go so well so we had to have this one.”

West Fargo’s dominance started in the first half and carried on throughout the rest of regulation.

The Packers led 22-16 with 7 minutes, 10 seconds left in the first and finished the half on a 14-2 run. That run allowed West Fargo to go into the half up 36-18.

“We didn’t know how well we would play coming in, but we did know that we had to play better than we did against Shanley,” West Fargo head coach Greg Limke said. “We had to make improvements and it wasn’t really about winning or losing this game it was about improving.”

West Fargo continued to prove itself in the final 18 minutes.

Davies cut the lead to 14 with 9:40 remaining, but the Packers never allowed the Eagles to get any closer than that margin. West Fargo’s largest lead of the second half was 25 points.

“You always wonder how you are going respond,” Limke said. “We played a really well in the first half, but halftime scores don’t do the job for you. … It was good to make plays right away and it was encouraging.”

West Fargo grabbed a total of 39 rebounds, 11 of which came on offense. Davies finished with 24 rebounds.

Justin Heisler added 13 points for the Packers and was joined in double figures by Travis Schock, who finished with 10.

Tanner Kretchman scored 19 points to lead the Eagles (7-3, 6-3).

“We didn’t play with any energy or any heart,” Davies head coach Bart Manson said. “Not to take anything away from West Fargo. They played well, we just didn’t come ready to play for some reason.”

Davies junior All-EDC guard Andrew Kozlowski left the game in the second half with a bruised left leg.

Manson said swelling kept Kozlowski from returning and that he would be re-evaluated early next week.
