West Fargo tops Fargo Davies in girls basketballFARGO – The West Fargo girls basketball team capped off its week with a big flurry of points.
The Packers used a 14-0 run during the final four minutes to post an Eastern Dakota Conference road victory over Fargo Davies 62-50 on Friday at Davies High School.
North Dakota Class A, No. 2-ranked West Fargo was locked in a tight game with the Eagles, who entered the game seventh in the EDC standings.
“They played really well and very aggressive,” West Fargo head coach Barb Metcalf said of Davies. “It was a good game for us and it was a reality check for us that we can’t take any opponent lightly.”
West Fargo and Davies were knotted at 48-48 with 4 minutes, 8 seconds remaining. Seniors Lexi Lennon and Christine Baltezore each hit 3-pointers during the late run that sealed the Packers’ ninth consecutive win.
Lennon finished with a game-high 19 points including four 3-pointers and Baltezore added 17 points to pace West Fargo (9-1, 9-1 EDC).
“We just stared finding each other,” Lennon said of the Packers’ run. “Everybody was hitting their shots. We all were connecting.
“We tried to keep our intensity and at the end of the game we really kicked it up and started going at it harder.”
Despite committing 12 turnovers in the first half, Davies led 25-24 at halftime.
Junior post Katelyn Olson completed a three-point play with 1:12 left in the first half to give Davies a 24-23 lead. Olson’s bucket and free throw marked the first time in the game the Eagles held the lead.
“I’m extremely proud of our girls,” Davies head coach Tonah Safranski said. “We took a lot of huge steps in the right direction tonight. We followed our game plan. We wanted to keep them from penetrating the basket and we did a good job of that.
“Their two seniors stepped up and hit a few big shots for them down the stretch.”
Davies rattled off a 9-0 run and led 46-41 with 5:59 left, but the Packers battled back to knot it at 46-all when junior Cassidy Thorson connected for a 3-pointer.
“We came from a pretty emotional win on Tuesday night against Shanley,” Metcalf said. “I give credit to Davies for playing well and I give credit to our girls, too, for surviving.”
Olson finished with 12 points leading Davies (3-7, 3-6). Jami Larson added to points for the Eagles.
