Frozen water pipes damage Grand Forks apartments

GRAND FORKS — Two apartment units sustained thousands of dollars in damage Wednesday after a frozen pipe burst and flooded the units and nearby hallway.

The units’ tenants will be unable to return to their homes for some time, according to Mike Sandery, a battalion chief with the Fire Department. He gave an unofficial damage estimate of $10,000 for the two units.

Firefighters were called to the Mall View Apartments on 24th Avenue South at about noon responding to a report of water seeping into an apartment unit. They discovered a frozen sprinkler head pipe was causing water to drain into the ceiling of the two units. Firefighters knocked holes in the ceiling to drain water faster.

The flooding damaged the ceilings, sheetrock, insulation and some furniture. The carpets were soaked, but should be all right if dried out, Sandery said.

The apartment complex experienced a similar frozen pipe break and similar damage shortly after Christmas.
