Shanley's Jacobson scores 44 points in boys basketball win over WF

WEST FARGO – Tuesday’s game started well and ended well for Fargo Shanley’s A.J. Jacobson.

Jacobson – a 6-foot-6 all-state forward and North Dakota State basketball commit – scored a career-best 44 points in Shanley’s 79-53 Eastern Dakota Conference boys basketball win over West Fargo.

“It was a fun game,” Jacobson said. “We had a lot going well for us tonight. West Fargo is a good defensive team, and we knew we had to take good shots at the right spots. Luckily, my teammates got me the ball in good spots. I was just feeling it tonight.”

Jacobson’s previous career high was 40. He surpassed that mark with a three-point play late in the second half.

Jacobson scored Shanley’s first 13 points.

“He started so hot,” Shanley head coach Shane Alderman said. “He had such a big night. I thought he was patient too. He let the game come to him early on and took a few shots to get us going. He picked his spots and picked some other opportunities to set other guys up. I’m very proud of him.”

The North Dakota Class A, No. 3-ranked Deacons led 35-19 at halftime and held a 34-22 rebound advantage over the Packers.

Senior guard Dylan Alderman added 19 points for the Deacons (8-1, 8-0 EDC).

Jacobson scored 24 points in the first half. He said the win was the biggest thing he and his teammates should take away from Tuesday.

“It’s more about us winning,” said Jacobson, who also finished with 11 rebounds three assists. “It is always great breaking your personal record, but what really feels good is the 79-53 victory against a West Fargo team that is always tough to be at home.”

West Fargo had no players break double figures. Brady Rotert and Derek Hogenson each finished with nine points to lead the Packers (6-4, 6-4).

Next up for Shanley is No. 1-ranked, undefeated Grand Forks Red River on the road Jan. 29.

“We got a tough one next week,” Jacobson said of the matchup with the Roughriders. “It is going to be a fun one and we are excited for it.”
