Weather Talk: Property owners should maintain icy sidewalksAs one who walks many, many miles each week, I am well aware of the risk of walking for exercise on sidewalks in winter.
The recent pattern of quick thaws and cold snaps with light precipitation in between has been just right for ice. Unfortunately, many property owners seem to take the approach that once over with a snow blower is good enough, no matter how icy the sidewalk is.
It would seem to me that out of common courtesy, or even out of a fear of liability, property owners would make the effort to spread some sand or salt on slippery sidewalks. I especially notice the property owners who have spread some sort of grit for traction over the part of the sidewalk they themselves use to get to their own door, while leaving glare ice on the portions of the sidewalks only the public uses.
And it is not just property owners. Sidewalks in Island Park have been extremely icy lately.
