Stenehjem: 'Do not call' violators tough to catchBISMARCK — North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem says he is as annoyed as anyone by telephone sales calls to his home.
Stenehjem told lawmakers on Tuesday that telemarketers who violate North Dakota's "Do Not Call" law are getting tougher to catch. He says scammers increasingly are "hijacking" telephone numbers to disguise their whereabouts, making them hard to find.
North Dakota's telemarketing law was passed in 2003 and bars most organizations from making telephone sales calls to homes if the phone number is listed on a state "do not call" list.
Stenehjem says the state has levied about $250,000 in fines over the years. He says that's more than what federal regulators have tallied over the years.
