Fargo's Josh Persons shoots 1-over 71 in his first PGA Tour round

HONOLULU – For a while, Josh Persons and the leaderboard at the Sony Open in Honolulu, Hawaii, were pretty tight company. The Fargo golfer was in 11th place after his first nine holes Thursday before settling with a 1-over par 71.

He’s in a tie for 88th place in his first PGA Tour tournament, an event that he made through a Monday qualifier.

Persons got through his first nine holes at 2-under with two birdies for a 33, but had three bogeys on the back nine for a 38. It’s a logjam at 1-over with several players including the likes of Zach Johnson, Boo Weekley and defending champion Johnson Wagner shooting the same score.

Persons, playing with Shawn Stefani of Houston and Justin Hicks of West Palm Beach, Fla., has the later tee time today at 5:40 p.m. CST.
