Davies cruises to win over South in boys basketball

FARGO – Fargo Davies’ offense did not have a case of the Mondays.

The Eagles cruised to a 79-64 Eastern Dakota Conference boys basketball victory over Fargo South on Monday at South High School.

Leading the way for North Dakota Class A, No. 5-ranked Davies was junior guard Tanner Kretchman, who finished with 28 points.

“Tanner is a key factor in everything we do,” Davies head coach Bart Manson said. “He is smart and takes care of the basketball. … He gets us into our offense. It’s important to have a good point guard and we’ve got one.”

Kretchman scored 16 of his 28 points in the first half, which was when the Eagles pulled away from the Bruins. Davies (5-1, 4-1 EDC) rattled off a 20-4 run during the first half and led 41-26 at halftime.

“This is a good step forward for us offensively and defensively,” Kretchman said. “We really struggled defensively the last couple of games, but we stepped up tonight and played good team ball.”

Paxton and Colton Lloyd were the only two Bruins to score in double figures. South struggled at times to get its offense going and could not get anything substantial working inside the paint.

Davies offense was multi-dimensional.

Kretchman and junior guard Andrew Kozlowski, who had 16 points, converted from the perimeter and drove to the hoop frequently. The Eagles also executed offensively by tossing the rock inside to 6-foot-6 senior post David Olson.

Olson finished with a double-double posting 21 points, and 10 rebounds.

“We always feel that we are best when we have both an inside and outside game going,” Manson said. “We create and make shots that way.”

Paxton Lloyd matched Kretchman with 28 points. Colton Lloyd finished with 15 for the Bruins (2-3, 2-3).

Davies came into Monday’s game having won its previous two games, but the Eagles had given up 73 points to Devils Lake at home last week.

“For us we thought about a couple of things coming into this game,” Manson said. “One, was we needed to be a better defensive team and I thought our defense was better tonight. We took steps in the right direction there.”
