Bruins score a win over Eagles in girls basketball

FARGO – Timely shooting proved to be the key ingredient in the Fargo South girls basketball team’s victory on Monday.

Seniors Alyssa May and Madeline Strandemo each connected for four 3-pointers in South’s 77-73 Eastern Dakota Conference win over Fargo Davies at South High School.

“For us to do well we need to be shooting the ball well, and we shot the ball about as well as we can tonight,” Fargo South head coach Jason Smedshammer said.

Strandemo had a game-high 25 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Bruins (3-3, 2-3 EDC). May finished with 12 points for South.

“This was the best game we have played all year by far,” May said. “Everybody was shooting well, especially Madeline.”

South led 36-27 at halftime. Davies (1-5, 1-4) trailed the entire second half, but got as close as three points when junior post Katelyn Olson sunk two free throws with 3 minutes, 58 seconds left in regulation to make it 63-60.

Olson paced the Eagles with 22 points and nine rebounds.

“Every time we got to within a few points of them, somebody for them would respond with a big shot,” Davies head coach Tonah Safranski said. “(Madeline) Strandemo had a few daggers that hurt us.”

Bria Taber also powered the persistent Bruins scoring 11 of her 19 points in the second half. Taber was one of four Bruins to reach double figures in the game.

May and Strandemo accounted for all South’s points from beyond the arc.

“Those two are excellent 3-point shooters,” Smedshammer said. “3-pointers make a difference in games, and when we hit those baskets tonight it definitely gave us momentum.”

Davies’ struggles also were linked to the 22 turnovers it committed in the game. The Eagles were also 10 of 23 at the free-throw line.

Junior Alexis Bolstad finished with 20 points and nine rebounds for Davies.

“Every metro game is big and anytime you can get a win over a crosstown rival, it is big for a team’s confidence.” Smedshammer said.
