Cobbers women cruise past St. Mary's for MIAC win

MOORHEAD – Emily Thesing made an impact in three different statistical categories Monday at Memorial Auditorium.

The Concordia senior finished with 19 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. That performance helped spark the Cobbers to an 81-68 victory against St. Mary’s in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women’s basketball.

“A very complete game … she has really been a quarterback for us and a heads-up player,” Cobbers head coach Jessica Rahman said of Thesing.

Thesing, a 5-foot-7 point guard from Brainerd, Minn., came close to recording her first career triple-double.

“That might be as close as I’ve gotten,” Thesing said with a smile.

The Cobbers (8-3, 7-1 MIAC) have won five consecutive games and have not lost since Dec. 3.

“We’re just playing really good team ball,” said Thesing, who sank three 3-pointers against St. Mary’s. “People are finding each other. It’s just been fun.”

The Cobbers had four different players score in double digits against the Cardinals. Concordia senior Tricia Sorensen netted a game-high 20 points. Sophomore guard Alley Fisher (17 points) and junior center Alexandra Lippert (12) also reaching double figures.

“When you have that kind of great balance … who do you guard?” Rahman said. “Who do you isolate?”

Sorensen and Thesing drained back-to-back

3-pointers with less than six minutes to play in the first half to push the Concordia lead into double digits. Those long-range shots capped a 14-5 run. Thesing completed the rally with a 3-pointer from the right wing that gave Concordia a 32-19 lead with 4 minutes, 18 seconds until halftime.
