Williston beefs up police patrols when bars close

WILLISTON, N.D. — A city in the midst of North Dakota's oil boom is boosting police patrols around the time that bars close in hopes of deterring alcohol-fueled crime.

Williston officers also are teaming up more often with Williams County Sheriff's deputies for backup.

Police Officer Walter Hall tells the Williston Herald that the department began increasing police presence around bars this summer. He says it's already improved safety by cutting down on altercations and drunken driving incidents.

Hall says being around the public more is also helping community relations because officers are talking more with area business owners and residents.
