Jamestown, Pipestem dams releasing at a trickle

JAMESTOWN, N.D. — Releases from the Jamestown and Pipestem dams are a mere trickle this winter.

That's according to Bob Martin, dam manager for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Martin tells the Jamestown Sun that since Nov. 1, the corps has been releasing 2 cubic feet per second out of Pipestem Dam. There have been no releases from the Jamestown Dam since June 15.

Martin says inflows from springs and groundwater have caused the lake at Jamestown Dam to increase a couple of inches this winter after dropping a whole foot due to evaporation last summer and fall.

Releases likely will stay at minimal levels because the summer's drought eliminated most of the moisture in the topsoil.
