Thursday review: Drink gives New Year’s resolution a boost

FARGO – “Drink more water” has been on my New Year’s resolutions list for years. I’m well aware of the benefits of this natural resource, but I usually end up drinking more coffee than water.

I’ve tried increasing my water intake with tea, with flavor packets, and with flavored and sparkling water.

Sparking ICE is both flavored and sparkling, it has zero calories, and it contains “fruit juices, vitamins and antioxidants,” like caffeine-free green tea extract.

It’s sweetened with Splenda, which I’m already accustomed to, so I don’t mind the “fake-sweet” taste.

I tried four of the eight available flavors. From best to worst: Orange Mango, Lemonade, Kiwi Strawberry and Coconut Pineapple.

I liked the light citrus taste of the Orange Mango and Lemonade, but the Kiwi Strawberry and Coconut Pineapple were met with an enthusiastic “Blech!”

The next time I spot the slender Sparkling ICE bottles on store shelves, I’m going for the Pomegranate Berry and Black Raspberry.

You can get them at local Hornbacher’s, Sun Mart Foods, Cash Wise and Walmart locations.

The company’s website offers recipes for things like punch and pound cake using their carbonated beverages.

Maybe I’ll ring in the New Year with a “Slim & Sparkling” Pink Grapefruit Breeze (or two!) and a toast to drinking more water.

Pink Grapefruit Breeze

1 ounce Malibu rum

2 ounces pineapple juice

Top with Grapefruit ICE

Stir gently and garnish with lime.
