Letter: Mayor Walaker’s surprising stanceFargo Mayor Dennis Walaker has taken a surprising stance on gun control and the Second Amendment. In response to his recent statements to The Forum:
“I don’t think that’s what the Second Amendment was. At that time it was for hunting and things like that and for bringing food to the table,” he said.
“A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” Where is hunting mentioned? Isn’t it more likely that the founders were talking about individual liberty, and revolution against oppressive government, given the historical context of Dec. 15, 1791?
