Chugging champion: Holds off competition, gag reflex to win eggnog title

MOORHEAD - ho, ho, ho, came close to being hurl, hurl, hurl, as Scott Schwandt slurped past his competition on Friday to win Park Christian School’s annual eggnog chugging contest.

Schwandt, a junior, chugged all 32 ounces and 1,600 calories worth of Cass-Clay Creamery’s holiday cheer in an unofficial record of 13.2 seconds.

Immediately after Schwandt drank the last few drops of nog and slammed his carton on the table, he exulted, punching his fist into the air and yelling, “Yes, yes, yes!”

Less than a half-minute later, his stomach caught up with his brain.

Schwandt bested his brother, freshman Mark Schwandt, sophomores Kenneth Griffis and Josiah Militzer, and junior Hunter Nickel in front of scores of their schoolmates in the dining room.

Students filming and timing the event with cellphones said the previous chugging record was 14 seconds.

Last year’s winner, Andrew Nelson, won with a relatively sedate speed gulp of 19.14 seconds.

Mark Schwandt was of two minds about his performance.

“I lost to my brother. I wasn’t too happy” about that, he said.

But he won’t ask for a family Christmas chugdown.

“It’s pretty disgusting,” he said.

Scott Schwandt said he hoped the glory won in the lunchroom wouldn’t cost him pride later on the basketball court.

“It’s going to be rough in practice today,” he said.
