Forum editorial: Committee spots win the rosesPRAIRIE ROSES: To U.S. Sen.-elect Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., for winning committee assignments on the Agriculture Committee and the Indian Affairs Committee. Both positions are important to North Dakota’s specific interests and to the nation as a whole. North Dakota senators have frequently served on the ag panel, and Heitkamp will join Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D., on the committee. The presence of both senators on the ag committee underscores its importance to their state. The same can be said for the Indian Affairs Committee, where North Dakota senators have served with distinction. Heitkamp’s assignments work nicely with North Dakota’s priorities.
LEAFY SPURGE: To businesses, specifically downtown businesses that routinely ignore their responsibility for clearing snow off the sidewalk in front of their stores. The light snowfall last week wasn’t much, but a walk downtown a day or two after the snowfall was treacherous because of the uneven snow removal by businesses that front on the sidewalks. The pattern was several cleaned and one covered with compacted snow, several more cleared and another neglected. Dangerous conditions for pedestrians and for patrons of the business places downtown. Downtown is a walking zone. It’s been rejuvenated into one of the most vibrant downtowns is the region. Simple things matter. Clean up trash. Keep it holiday bright. Shovel and scrape snow and ice from sidewalks.
