Pickup crashes into Civic Center, light pole

FARGO – The driver of a pickup truck apparently had a medical issue just before the vehicle hit the Fargo Civic Center and knocked over a light pole Saturday night, police said.

The man, who police said is in his mid-30s, was taken by ambulance to Sanford Medical Center for injuries not believed to be life-threatening. Police said he had facial injuries but was conscious at the scene.

The accident was reported at 9:43 p.m.

Officer Dean Jordheim said it appeared the man passed out at the stoplight on Fourth Street at Third Avenue North. The pickup crashed into the west side of the Civic Center, damaging a table-sized area of the wall, before knocking over the light pole and getting hung up on its base.

The pickup’s wheels continued to spin, burning the rubber off the tires and setting off smoke alarms inside the Civic Center, Assistant Fire Chief Gary Lorenz said. Firefighters reset the alarms after the smoke cleared, he said.

Alcohol was not involved in the accident, Sgt. Jim VanLith said.

A towing service was called to remove the pickup.
