Strom's 30 paces Deacons to win over West Fargo in boys hoops

FARGO – Thursday’s game was Shane Alderman’s first as the head boys basketball coach at Fargo Shanley.

After one game it is so far, so good for Alderman and the Deacons.

Shanley defeated West Fargo 75-56 in Eastern Dakota Conference play at McCormick gymnasium.

“We talked about trying to leave a good first impression,” Alderman said. “That is a big thing with me, and I thought we did that.”

Junior guard Patrick Strom led the North Dakota Class A No. 1-ranked Deacons with 30 points. Strom connected for six 3-pointers in the game.

North Dakota State basketball signee A.J. Jacobson added 26 for Shanley

(1-0, 1-0 EDC).

The 6-foot-6 senior forward had 16 in the second half, which was when the Deacons pulled away.

Shanley led 41-32 at halftime. Jacobson didn’t register a point in the game until 8 minutes, 7 seconds left in the first half, but from then on he was finishing at the hoop regularly despite early foul trouble.

West Fargo (0-1, 0-1) kept it close early with its defense, but Strom and Jacobson eventually got going.

“They are very good,” West Fargo head coach Greg Limke said. “We kept trying, making runs at them, but they are just a good solid team. … We just couldn’t get enough to get over the hump.”

Of the 34 points scored by Shanley in the second half, 33 came from Jacobson and Strom.

Jacobson – who also had 16 rebounds in the game – said patience won out in the end.

“West Fargo is a good team and they always try to slow you down a little bit,” Jacobson said. “They are a great defensive team, but we just tried to persevere through it, look for the open man and score.”

Senior center Derek Hogenson paced the Packers with 11 points. West Fargo senior Luke Johnson finished with 10 points.

“We want to be a team that can get up and down the floor, battle and get some stops on defense,” Alderman said. “Early it looked like we couldn’t do that. West Fargo had a counter for everything. Later in the game we did get some stops on defense and looked like a pretty good team the first game out of the chute.”

The Fargo Shanley Athletic Club donated $405 collected from its halftime shootout to West Fargo High School in honor of the school’s three students who died last week.
