Fashion in Focus: Toddler holiday fashion take cues from grown-up looks

I’m always looking for reasons to dress up my 3-year-old daughter in super cute, stylish outfits, and what better opportunity than Christmas?

The holiday season provides plenty of festivities to glam up your little cuties, and this season there are lots of adorable trends from which to choose.

I went to Gap Kids at West Acres Shopping Center and Old Navy in Fargo to find some chic looks for the holidays for your mini fashionistas and dapper little gentlemen.

What stands most about kids’ fashion this year is that it is very much like adults’.

A timeless Christmas look for little girls has always been the perfect red dress. The same is true for women. I found this darling scarlet dress for 3-year-old Waverly Jessen at Gap Kids for $45.99.

Waverly’s look incorporates a second big trend in women’s fashion: floral patterns and appliqués. The tulle flowers on the dresses’ bodice, the silk flower headband (Gap Kids, $12.95) and leather rosettes on her Mary Janes (Old Navy, $7.47) are cute ways for kids to wear florals.

Glitz, glamour and shine are the themes of the holiday season for women’s fashion, and this is the same for little girls. My daughter, Isabella, is wearing a gold shimmery dress from Gap Kids ($44.95) with cream tulle trim leggings (Gap Kids, $12.95).

Her accessories are inspired by one of my favorite designers, Lanvin. The French fashion house is known for its rhinestone-embellished ballet flats and accessories. The Gap Kids flats ($29.95) Isabella is wearing are knockoffs of the women’s version. Her hair band ($8.99, Gap Kids) rounds out the Lanvin look with its rhinestone flower detail.

Isabella couldn’t put down her glitter gold heart purse from Gap Kids ($21.95). Glitzy handbags are the must-have accessory for women’s fashion, so it’s fun to see Gap made its own style of the “it bag” for little girls.

A faux fur coat is a great way to round out your little trendsetter’s look.

Supermodel Kate Moss made the faux fur coat the ultimate chic look to top off your cocktail or black-tie dress for evening. Old Navy makes a pure white, plushy girls’ version with a Peter Pan collar and clear buttons ($11.99).

Little boys’ fashion is similar to men’s looks this season. The trends for boys are effortless style and comfort.

Four-year-old Adam Schaefer wears the ultimate “cute boy” look in a navy cable knit pullover sweater from Gap Kids ($39.95) with distressed denim jeans ($24.95), and tan suede boots ($34.95). His look is comfortable and easy without skimping on style.

Adam’s boots match with every color this season and make his outfit look cool and polished. The fringe toggle hat (Gap Kids, $16.95) adds a festive Christmas look.

Everett Enz looks super cute in a soft charcoal gray V-neck pullover ($29.95) and red plaid shirt (29.95) from Gap Kids. I love stylish-yet-classic plaid on little boys for the holidays. The 21-month-old is wearing straight-leg distressed jeans ($24.95) from Gap Kids and chocolate brown suede boots (Gap Kids $32.99). I finished his look with an intarsia-knit hat. Not only is this look super comfortable, it can’t get much cuter.
