Williston voters reject $55 million school bond issue

WILLISTON, N.D. — Voters in Williston have shot down a $55 million school bond issue and tax increase to pay for school construction.

The Williston Herald reports that the bond issue and tax increase received less than 30 percent support. The money would have paid for needed school construction and renovations for the rapidly expanding school district.

The district had plans to build a new elementary school where Rickard Elementary is located to open in 2015. Plans called for tearing down Wilkinson Elementary and building a new middle school on that site.

School Board president Sue Brokaw says the district will continue to educate students in the current buildings and modular classrooms and technology advances will be sluggish.
