Wisconsin boy killed by father plowing snow

A 4-year-old Star Prairie, Wis., boy was killed Tuesday when his father accidentally struck him with a pickup truck while plowing snow.

Collin Fitzgerald was stuck by the truck driven by his father, Daniel Fitzgerald, in the driveway of their home in the 1000 block of 238th Avenue shortly before noon, according to the St. Croix County sheriff’s office.

Daniel Fitzgerald thought his son was playing in a snow fort on the front lawn when he plowed the home’s driveway. At one point he noticed blood in the snow and looked closer to find Collin had been injured, the sheriff’s office said.

Daniel Fitzgerald immediately called for help and attempted to save the boy’s life. No other family members were home at the time of the accident.

Collin had been run over by the pick up and suffered massive head injuries. He was taken by ambulance to Westfields Hospital in New Richmond, where he was pronounced dead, according to the sheriff’s office.

"This is one of the most tragic events that anyone could ever have to deal with," said St. Croix County Sheriff John Shilts in a statement Wednesday. "This is an accident by all accounts, and our thoughts and prayers go out to the Fitzgerald family."
