Weather Talk: A look at memorable December cold snaps

December weather can be cold, but it is not usually the coldest of the winter. The coldest weather in any winter in Fargo-Moorhead is more likely to occur during January or February.

But there have been some memorable December cold snaps. Most recently, December of 2000 ranks as the second-coldest December on record. In fact, today in the year 2000, we were in the middle of a three-day run of subzero high temperatures. All but four daily low temperatures that month were below zero.

December 1983 brought eight consecutive days of subzero high temperatures just before Christmas. Dec. 23 was brutally cold, with a high of 18 below and a low of 31 below.

The coldest December on record is 1886. Thirteen of the 31 low temperatures that month were at 20 below or colder, with four mornings at least 30 below.
