Letter: Vote a big step to improve healthThanks to the voters of Cass County for choosing health. The Cass County community has taken a huge step toward improving the health of its people by encouraging passage of Measure 4, which protects everyone from secondhand smoke.
Vast scientific evidence shows that secondhand smoke is a direct cause of diseases such as lung cancer, heart disease, and lung and bronchial infections. Some of the health benefits we can expect from a smoke-free ordinance include:
- Fewer heart attacks and strokes among nonsmokers.
- Lower smoking rates among teens.
- Help for the seven out of every 10 smokers who want to quit smoking by providing public environments free from temptation to smoke.
I encourage the 70 percent of Cass County residents who voted “yes” on the smoke-free ordinance to share their support with local media and organizations. Let’s not look for “loopholes” but share news of success for the health of our county and state.
