Jamestown tops Fargo Davies in girls basketball

FARGO – The Jamestown girls basketball team came out running in its first game of the season.

The Blue Jays used their speed and pressure defense to score an 88-76 win over Fargo Davies on Saturday at the Davies High School gymnasium.

Jamestown also featured a balanced offense, with four players scoring in double figures.

“It was a great start for us,” Jamestown head coach Andy Skunberg said. “We came out and hit a lot of shots. We forced some pressure, got some turnovers and got some easy layups. Those are the things we have to do this year as a team.”

Senior guard Kyra Dewald paced the Blue Jays with 21 points. Senior forward Billie Buchanan added 20.

Junior center Paige Peterson collected a double-double for Jamestown, scoring 17 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

“We were pretty balanced offensively as a team,” Skunberg said. “Anyone at any given point can get us points, and that is huge.”

Junior guard McKayla Orr scored 11 points – all in the second half – for Jamestown.

Davies (0-1) led 45-44 at halftime.

The Blue Jays made their move in the second half, going on a 9-0 run during a four-minute span, giving them a 69-60 lead with 6 minutes, 39 seconds left.

Davies went 5:21 without scoring a field goal at one point in the second half.

“They run the floor really well, and we got caught up in that track meet,” Davies head coach Tonah Safranski said. “That is really not our style of play. … They did a good job of pushing the ball on us, getting some baskets and obviously scoring a lot of points.”

Junior guards Kinsey Papachek and Lauren Hage scored 17 and 15 points, respectively, to pace the Eagles.

“I thought offensively we did a pretty good job, but at times we stopped running our offense and that caught up with us,” Safranski said.

Katelyn Olson and Alexis Bolstad each added 13 points for Davies.
