Hawley tops Oak Grove in boys basketball

HAWLEY, Minn. – A steal followed by a slam dunk turned out be the spark the Hawley boys basketball team needed on Thursday.

Hawley senior Devon Pekas intercepted a pass at midcourt and finished with a dunk in transition. The play was a part of a big second-half rally by the Nuggets during an 80-71 win over Fargo Oak Grove at the Hawley High School gym.

Pekas’ slam was part of a 20-2 run Hawley put together over a span of 8 minutes, 38 seconds in the second half.

“Actually Jordan Harms was on the left side and I was getting ready to throw a lob to him,” Pekas said. “The defender pulled off to him, so I went up and got it.”

Pekas – a 6-foot-4 forward – finished with a team-high 22 points, including four 3-pointers.

“We got fired up when Pekas stole the ball and slammed it,” Hawley head coach Jed Carlson said. “That got the crowd going and everyone played with some extra intensity.”

Hawley – ranked No. 8 in Minnesota Class 2A – trailed 43-36 at halftime.

The steal-and-slam by Pekas came with 11:04 left in regulation and gave the Nuggets a 55-54 lead. Hawley never trailed after that.

The North Dakota Class B, No. 3-ranked Grovers struggled from the field in the second half. Oak Grove head coach Kyle Card credited Hawley’s 1-3-1 defense for the scoring drought.

“They went to that 1-3-1 defense and we were not making shots,” Card said. “I give them credit for that. The ball wasn’t going into the basket, and if the ball isn’t going in the basket sometimes we get frustrated and bring it to the defensive end.”

Senior 6-foot-6 center Jordan Crompton added 20 points for the Nuggets (3-0). Sophomore forward Ben Ellefson and sophomore guard Jordan Harms scored 16 and 10 points, respectively, for the Nuggets.

“Anytime you defeat a ranked team in any state it is a big thing,” Pekas said. “It’s a big boost for us.”

Senior forward Tyler Christianson finished with 21 points leading the Grovers (2-1). Senior guard Jordan Funfar connected for four

3-pointers and posted 14 points for Oak Grove.
