Passed federal defense bill includes C-27JFARGO – Federal legislation passed Tuesday includes support for air base missions across North Dakota, including funding for a manned jet mission in Fargo, according to the office of Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D.
Hoeven said in a news release that the Department of Defense Authorization Act for 2013 passed by the U.S. Senate on Tuesday includes funding for and sets up an evaluation of the C-27J cargo aircraft in Fargo.
The C-27J is a smaller, more flexible cargo aircraft that is newer and less expensive to operate than the larger C-130 now in service, Hoeven said. It would also keep a manned air mission in Fargo.
The new legislation also includes funding for a Global Hawk unmanned mission in Grand Forks, and the B-52 bomber and intercontinental ballistic missile system based in Minot.
The U.S. House has already passed its own version of the defense bill. Leaders of both houses of Congress will now convene to prepare a final, reconciled version of the bill.
