Grafton-Park River defeats Fargo South-Shanley in boys hockeyFARGO – After letting one two-goal lead slip away on Saturday, the Grafton-Park River boys hockey team made sure its second two-goal advantage stuck.
The Spoilers scored two goals in the third period in a 4-2 North Dakota, East Region win over Fargo South-Shanley at Scheels Arena.
Leading the way for Grafton-PR was junior forward Jade Miller, who had two goals and an assist.
Miller’s first goal gave the Spoilers (4-1-0, 1-1-0 East Region) a 2-0 lead, but the Bruins stormed back with two goals in the second period.
“We got pretty comfortable right away with the goal lead and let them back into it,” said Miller, who leads the East Region in scoring with 11 points. “We came out in the third period and put pressure on them.”
Miller leads the state in goals scored with eight.
South-Shanley sophomore forward James Johannesson scored the Bruins’ first goal 5 minutes, 53 seconds into the second period. Junior forward Tom George followed with a goal 33.7 seconds before the end of the second.
“In the first half of the second period, we felt like we got the momentum back,” South-Shanley head coach Wade Storey said. “We took a few penalties and that gave them the momentum back. They just kept building on that.”
The Spoilers came out shooting in the third period.
South-Shanley goalie Jake Salentine held off the early opportunities, but with 10:27 left, Grafton-PR broke through when senior forward Peter Hills scored a short-handed goal.
Hills’ goal was assisted by Miller and junior defenseman Ryan Woinarowicz. Woinarowicz assisted on three of the Spoilers’ four goals.
“Anytime you can get a positive while killing penalties, it is a good thing,” Grafton-PR head coach Scott Petersen said. “We had to improve our energy level, and that is what we did on the penalty kill. It was good to get that spark and we worked from there.”
The victory kept the Spoilers from their first losing streak of the season. Grafton-PR lost to Fargo North on Tuesday at home after winning their opening three games of the season.
“After losing to North it is definitely good to get back in the winning column,” Miller said. “It’s definitely a huge plus for us.”
Salentine collected 24 saves for South-Shanley (1-1-0, 0-1-0).
Junior defenseman Grant Schumacher scored Grafton-PR’s first goal of the game.
