Fargo North skates past West Fargo in boys hockey
In less than two minutes of regulation play, the Spartans – the defending North Dakota state champions – found themselves down 2-0 against West Fargo.
The outburst prompted North head coach Rob Aasand to take a timeout. After the huddle, the Spartans scored five unanswered goals to post a 5-2 East Region win over the Packers at the John E. Carlson Coliseum.
“For some reason we thought West Fargo was going to be a pushover,” Aasand said. “We came out slow and they got two right away. We just had to regroup.”
Junior forward Tyler Berginski scored the Packers’ first goal 20 seconds into regulation. Less than a minute later, West Fargo senior forward Tyler Crouse got a shot past North goalie Austin Toussaint.
North was able to tie the game 2-2 in the first period with goals from Spencer Klein and Spencer Helming. Helming’s goal came with 24.2 seconds left in the first period.
“After the timeout, the guys decided to play strong,” Aasand said. “They played hard and played much smarter after that. They got the job done and tied it up before the end of the first period so we could go into the second even up.
“After that, we took it to them and came away with a victory.”
The second period belonged to North (3-1-0). The Spartans outshot the Packers 19-3 and scored two goals to take the lead.
Senior forward Max Teschendorf scored the go-ahead goal on a power play and Jackson Graalum added a goal late in the period.
Penalties were the undoing of West Fargo.
“They got guys that work hard and we took a lot of penalties in the second period which threw us out of our game a little bit,” West Fargo co-head coach Tim Capouch said. “We told our players the only way we are going to beat them is to get a quick jump on them.
“They did exactly what we wanted them to do except for all the penalties.”
Junior goalie Bailey Vareberg had 29 saves for the Packers (1-2-0). Toussaint collected 16 saves for North.
Senior Michael Gunderson scored North’s lone goal in the third period.
