Buzzer beater lifts SDSU past UND in men's hoops

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Without its top scorer and one of its top reserves, the University of North Dakota men’s basketball team still took South Dakota State to the wire on Wednesday night.

In the end, though, North Dakota dropped a great opportunity at a road victory.

SDSU’s Chad White hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from the left wing to lift the Jacks to a shocking 71-70 win over North Dakota at Frost Arena.

UND guard Jamal Webb missed a free throw with 12 seconds left to set up White’s heroics. Webb had forced a turnover of SDSU’s Nate Wolters with 12 seconds left and was fouled.

“We got better, but it comes down to making foul shots on the road,” UND coach Brian Jones said in a postgame radio interview. “We played about 34 minutes of good basketball. That’s not enough on the road.”

UND, which dropped to 1-4, played without standout Troy Huff, who is out another few weeks with a jaw injury. North Dakota was also without junior college transfer Alonzo Traylor, who was injured in practice this week.

UND post Doug Archer stepped up in their absence. Archer scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds.

“Doug is a fifth-year senior who does exactly what we ask him to do,” Jones said. “He’s shown great leadership.”

UND had four players in double figures, led by Josh Schuler’s 13 points. Archer chipped in 12 points, while Webb had 11 and Mitch Wilmer also added 11.

Jones wasn’t disappointed in the final sequence. White hit the jumper over the tight defense of Lenny Antwi.

“It just came down to timely shots,” Jones said. “We can’t guard that play any better. (White) just had a little bit of length on him.”

South Dakota State, which advanced to the NCAA tournament a year ago, was led by its two stars, Jordan Dykstra and Nate Wolters. Wolters had 21 points thanks to 10-for-13 shooting from the foul line. Dykstra had 21 points and eight rebounds. He was 4-for-6 from beyond the arc.

After falling behind 10-0 to start the game, UND overcame the slow start to take a 38-32 halftime lead. The game had 13 lead changes in the second half.
