Letter: Since when are they Winter Lights?I didn’t know they were Winter Lights.
Maybe I am too old for all the changes or it might just be my upbringing. You see, I remember going to Herbst Department Store in downtown Fargo when we were kids and looking at the animated displays in the windows. Remember the mailman stuck in the snow?
I remember the Christmas tree decorated with lights – as a child it seemed so big. I remember the candy canes and the wreaths lighted and hung on the light poles and the stores with signs saying “Merry Christmas.” I remember every Christmas Eve reading to my children the poem that was always on the front page of The Forum: “Twas the Night before Christmas” and the next day going to church to celebrate the birth of Christ and the hope of redemption that came with it.
I also know we are a nation of immigrants. With them come different beliefs and traditions. We must embrace them, honor them and celebrate with them. For me, however, this will always be the Christmas season. These will always be the Christmas decorations … not the Winter Lights as pictured in The Forum on Nov. 16.
Hopefully I have passed this on to my children and their children.
In this season of joy and celebration and hope, I will be wishing everyone a merry and blessed Christmas.
