West Fargo warns of phone scam

WEST FARGO – Authorities are alerting residents to a new telephone scam.

The West Fargo Police Department said a person was called Tuesday by a company claiming to be affiliated with Microsoft, offering to remotely fix computers over the Internet for $14. They also were directed to visit teamviewer.com for a free trial.

But the suspect is not affiliated with this legitimate website and was using it as a distraction, police said. The victim’s credit card company recognized the charge as fraudulent and stopped the $257 transaction, not $14 like the victim was told. The suspect also had the victim transfer money through Western Union.

Anyone with information is asked to call the West Fargo Police Department at (701) 433-5500 or Crime Watch at (701) 241-5777.
