Bison extend men's basketball winning streak to four

PITTSBURGH – The North Dakota State men’s basketball team extended its winning streak en route to capturing the Pittsburgh Subregional at the Progressive Legends Classic.

Taylor Braun had 19 points, seven rebounds and six assists as the Bison defeated James Madison

66-44 on Wednesday.

It was the fourth straight victory for NDSU, and its third win in as many days.

“This group is really bonding on the defensive end,” NDSU head coach Saul Phillips said. “It’s paying early dividends and we got to continue to improve.”

Braun had a big hand in a key 7-0 for the Bison. With NDSU up 37-32 midway through the second half, Braun hit a 3-pointer, got a steal and an assist, then followed with a leaning jump shot to give NDSU a 44-32 lead with 11 minutes, 11 seconds to go.

“It took us a while to get used to (James Madison’s defense) and figure it out,” Braun said. “We just kept attacking it.”

The Dukes went the final 8:28 of the game without making a field goal.

“Our depth was really good,” Phillips said. “Especially defensively we don’t drop off with our next group.”

TrayVonn Wright added 12 points for the Bison, with all of them coming in the second half.

NDSU shot 53 percent from the floor, and made 8 of 18 3-point attempts.

The victory marked the third time in the last four games that the Bison have held an opponent under 60 points.

Andre Nation led the Dukes with 10 points.

NDSU’s next game is at 7 p.m. Saturday at Green Bay.

“It’s nice to have a winning streak like this,” Braun said.
