Letter: Rods put cyclists in danger

You may have seen, or even own, some of those orange rods that are intended to stick into the ground to mark the edge of your yard or driveway. Well, from a cyclist’s standpoint, they are dangerous.

On three separate occasions and locations, I have been riding my bicycle at night and was unable to see them until it was too late. Next thing I know, I was getting whipped across the hand from them, causing some fairly intense pain, after which my bike is getting scraped up on the underside as they pass beneath my bike.

Also, from the height of a cyclist on a bike and the height of them sticking out of the ground, if one were to fall onto one during the hand-smashing melee, it is at just the right height to possibly get impaled upon. Those things are very unsafe for cyclists.
