Bison get one back, defeat No. 24 Boise State in wrestling

FARGO – North Dakota State wrestler Trent Sprenkle recalls watching Boise State win the last four matches last season to top the Bison in a college wrestling dual.

On Friday, Sprenkle pinned Rami Haddadin in 6 minutes, 12 seconds to give to the Bison an insurmountable lead as NDSU beat No. 24 Boise State

24-15 at the Bison Sports Arena.

Sprenkle was the only Bison to pin his opponent, but he was among six NDSU wrestlers to win their matches.

The Bison avenged last year’s loss to the Broncos and won their season-opening dual.

“Coach gave me the look that, ‘You better get a pin,’ so I figured I’d do my best and give it one last shot,” Sprenkle said. “To beat them by the margin that we did, it gives us a good starting point. If we can beat the No. 24 team in the country, our hopes are high for the year.”

Sprenkle came out of the gate fast, picking up six points from takedowns in the first period and took a 14-3 lead into the third. Twelve seconds later it was over, and the Bison were on their way.

“We got off to a slow start here, and it was a pretty sloppy dual on our end,” Bison head coach Roger Kish said. “But Trent went out and wrestled hard. He was winning by 13 points when he got the win. He wrestled hard the whole time and stayed after it. … He did a nice job.”

Leading up to the deciding match, NDSU’s Hayden Zillmer and Kallen Kleinschmidt picked up wins by decisions over George Ivanov and Cody Dixon, respectively. Mark Erickson, Steven Monk also picked up decisions, and Josh Rodriguez earned a win by forfeit.

Zillmer – a redshirt freshman – wrestled into overtime against 20th-ranked Ivanov after a takedown 2 seconds left in regulation. He picked up the

8-7 win after overtime, with a riding time advantage.

“I kind of backed down a little bit, and I didn’t finish a few shots that I should of, but it felt good,” Zillmer said. “I felt like I got the people going, got the crowd going. People were saying it was my opener today so I couldn’t ask for anymore.”
