Dickinson beats Shanley in five sets in ND Class A volleyball quarterfinals

MINOT, N.D. – The last quarterfinal match of the North Dakota Class A state volleyball tournament on Thursday went the distance.

Dickinson rallied to defeat Fargo Shanley 25-23, 16-25, 13-25, 25-17, 16-14 at the Minot State Dome.

The Midgets were led by senior outside hitter Abby Grove, who posted 17 kills, one block and two ace serves in the match.

“We all kept ourselves up,” Grove said. “We got down at a couple points, but we all cheered for each other and said, ‘Hey, we got to play with emotion and get after it.’ ”

Dickinson (27-10) advances to play Bismarck Century at 8 p.m. today in the semifinals.

Shanley (22-10) dropped the opening set, but recovered. The Deacons held a

2-1 set advantage over the Midgets heading into the fourth set.

The Deacons hoped to close the match out, but Dickinson had other plans. Dickinson used an 8-0 run to push the match to a deciding fifth set.

“This is a game of momentum, and we were fortunate to steal the momentum in the fourth set,” Dickinson head coach Jay Schobinger said. “When you have (the momentum), it is difficult for the other team to get it back.”

Shanley and Dickinson were tied on six different occasions in the fifth set.

Dickinson led 14-11, but Shanley eventually tied it at 14-all. A kill by Grove and a Shanley error tipped the set – and the match – in Dickinson’s favor.

“The tale of the whole match was who could get who out of system,” Shanley head coach Curt Johnson said. “We did it twice to them, and they did twice to us. In that fifth set, it was just great volleyball. We just came up short.”

Sophomore Alivia Fraase led the Deacons with 19 kills.

Shanley plays Fargo Davies in the consolation semifinals at 2 p.m. today.

The quarterfinal victory is Dickinson’s first since 2006 when the Midgets won back-to-back state titles.

“It felt great,” said Dickinson senior Ali Moody, who finished with 10 kills. “It was the best feeling in the world. I can’t remember when Dickinson High won the first match at state, so it is a big deal for us.”

DICKINSON (kills-blocks-aces): Priebe 0-0-2, Grove 17-1-2 (12 digs), Hoffman 0-0-1, Hutchens 2-1-0, Cooper 3-3-0, Moody 10-1-0 (27 assists, 18 digs), Gangl 1-1-0, Schroeder 5-1-0, Beaudoin 2-1-0.
