Bismarck Century defeats Fargo Davies in ND Class A volleyball quarterfinalsMINOT, N.D. – Fargo Davies had difficulties finding a rhythm in its first-ever state tournament volleyball match.
The East Region No. 4-seeded Eagles drew West Region No. 1 seed Bismarck Century in the Class A quarterfinals. And on Thursday, the Patriots’ experience won out.
Century swept Davies
25-10, 27-25, 25-18 at the Minot State Dome.
The Patriots (34-4) used their defense and blocking to keep Davies out of sync most of the match.
“Century is a great hitting team,” Fargo Davies head coach Heather Stuberg said. “We couldn’t get them out of system, and when they are in system, they keep our blockers guessing.”
Hannah Larson – a 6-foot senior outside hitter – led the Patriots with 12 kills, six blocks and two ace serves.
Century plays Dickinson in the semifinals at 8 p.m. today.
The Patriots cruised to win the opening set.
“Coming in we were really excited to play, and that gave us the momentum for the rest of the match,” Larson said. “We played well as a team.”
Davies held leads late in both the second and third sets.
“I think we came out a little shell-shocked in that first set,” Stuberg said. “We just played really tight. After that, we loosened up a little bit and played our game.”
Eagles’ errors and timely Century hitting gave the Patriots the final advantage to earn the sweep.
Defense also tipped the match in Century’s favor. Mikaila Wax and Courtney Kessler combined for 27 digs in the match for the Patriots.
“Defense is the biggest part of the game,” Larson said. “If you can’t get a dig up, you can’t get the set and the kill. I think our defense played well, and we pursued every ball.”
Jordyn Jossart finished with 10 kills for Century.
Senior outside hitter Kali Erickson had 10 kills to lead Davies (25-12). Davies plays Fargo Shanley in the consolation semifinals at 2 p.m. today.
Century has played in the state championship match three of the last four years and won the state title in 2008.
“It is one step closer to where we want to be,” Century co-head coach Jamie Zastoupil said. “But we are not there yet.”
