West Fargo sweeps Jamestown in Class A volleyball quarterfinals

MINOT, N.D. – The West Fargo volleyball team has arrived in Minot and they are swinging.

The Packers used their potent hitting attack to score a 25-21, 25-19, 25-23 sweep over West Region No. 2-seeded Jamestown on Thursday during the quarterfinals of the North Dakota Class A state volleyball tournament at the Minot State Dome.

“I think our ball control was the best it has been all season,” West Fargo head coach Paula Pierson said. “When we pass the ball well, it gives our setters options.”

Option 1A was 5-foot-11 junior middle blocker Amanda Levin, and Option 1B was 5-foot-8 senior middle blocker Christina Bruenjes.

Levin paced the East Region No. 3-seeded Packers with 15 kills and two ace serves. Bruenjes finished with 12 kills.

“We know that when we swing, no one can stop us,” Bruenjes said. “If we start tipping, that is not our game, and we sink to the other team’s level. As long as we keep swinging, we can beat anyone.”

West Fargo (21-14) advances to play East Region top seed Grand Forks Red River at 6 p.m. today in the semifinals.

It is the Packers’ first trip to the semifinals since 2008. West Fargo lost to Bismarck Century in five sets last year in the quarterfinals.

“We definitely wanted to come in fast and put the pressure on Jamestown,” Pierson said. “We had a little more experience. I thought if we could jump out on them, we would be a little more relaxed.”

Jamestown (26-10) was making its first state tournament appearance since 2001.

Senior middle blocker Siri Jystad totaled eight kills to lead Jamestown, but errors piled up in the match for the Blue Jays.

“We had more errors than they did,” Jamestown head coach Sara Hegerle said. “The plan coming in here was to put pressure on them, serve tough and keep them out of system. I don’t think we did that.

“They had some offensive players that we couldn’t adjust to.”

Junior Shelby Gustafson added five kills for the Packers.

Jamestown plays Bismarck at noon today in the consolation semifinals.

JAMESTOWN (kills-blocks-aces): Me. Orr 0-0-1 (10 digs), Jystad 8-1-1, Stilwell 3-1-0, Horgan 0-0-0 (9 assists), Keller 3-1-0, Eamon 7-0-0, Hegerle 1-2-2 (18 assists), Heilman 1-0-0, Niemeier 0-0-2 (5 digs).

WEST FARGO: Klug 0-0-1 (37 assists), Bruenjes 12-0-0, Suppa 4-1-1 (14 digs), Levin 15-0-2, Sand 3-0-0, Gustafson 5-1-0 (10 digs).
