A Broadway holiday: Events aim to spread cheer in and around downtown

FARGO – The days are getting shorter and it’s getting darker earlier, but the lights will be shining bright on Broadway.

Whether you’re ready or not, Downtown Fargo is getting into the seasonal swing this week with a handful of holiday events.

Things kick off tonight with the start of the Shine into the Holidays, which aims to bring people to downtown Fargo for their holiday shopping and merriment. While the open houses throughout downtown start at 5 p.m., and stay open until 10, at 7 p.m. the trees on Broadway will be lit up, a symbolic season opener.

Other events involved in the campaign include Small Business Saturday a mom-and-pop follow-up to Black Friday, including carriage rides (let’s see big box retailers offer that!) on Nov. 24. Cheer-ity Night, a fundraiser for the Great Plains Food Bank, follows on Nov. 29 and happenings continue through December.

Separate from Shine into the Holidays, but still offering seasonal spirit, is the Pride of Dakota Holiday showcase this weekend at Fargo’s Civic Memorial Auditorium.

The bazaar setting features regional foods, ranging from breads and soups to syrups and jams, to jewelry, decorations and goods meant as gifts for others or just treats for yourself.

The event runs from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Still, the season doesn’t fully begin in earnest until the Xcel Energy Holiday Lights Parade Tuesday night.

A highlight of the holidays, the annual event starts rolling at 6:30 p.m. at the corner of Center Avenue and Eighth Street South in Moorhead. The brightly lit rigs move east into Fargo, over NP Avenue and over to Broadway before heading north to Sixth Avenue.
