Fargo Park Board: Age restrictions set for golf coursesFARGO – The Fargo Park Board on Tuesday voted 3-1 to establish age restrictions for youth who use the Park District’s five golf courses.
The dissenting vote was from Joe Deutsch, who said he anticipated calls from unhappy parents who wouldn’t understand why it wasn’t their job to decide when their children were ready to use a golf course or practice range.
Board President Joel Vettel, the father of two children young enough to be subject to the restrictions, said he found the limits “very reasonable.”
Under the new rules, the golf courses and minimum age required to be on them are:
- Osgood, 5; El Zagal, 4; Edgewood, 7; Rose Creek, 7, and Prairiewood, 4.
- For Osgood, children 5-7 must be supervised; for El Zagal and Prairiewood, children 4-7 must be supervised.
- At Edgewood and Rose Creek, children 7-10 must be accompanied by an adult.
The minimum age to be on a practice range is 4 and children 4-7 must be supervised.
Park officials said the courses had different rules based on the level of play at the various courses and factors like golf cart traffic.
Officials said the Park District experienced higher than usual requests to allow young children onto the courses during the 2012 golf year and of the five courses Osgood had the most requests.
The policy will be reviewed at the end of the 2013 season.
In other action, the board approved a plan for the Park District to rent bikes at Lindenwood Park. Bike rentals had been run by Trailpath Rentals under a contract with the district.
Vettel said he backed the change because on at least three occasions he personally checked the rental office and found it closed at times it should have been open, including a busy holiday weekend.
The Park District will purchase the operation’s bike inventory for $35,000 and pay $10,000 to renovate the rental office.
