Letter: Story was not harmlessBNSF Railway would like to express its great concern over the article and photos published in the Sept. 20 edition of The Forum. The photos and article romanticize a lifestyle that engages in “hitching rides” on moving trains.
Nationwide in 2011, more than 400 people were fatally injured from trespassing on railroad property. That same year in Minnesota, four people were killed and five injured as they trespassed on railroad tracks. In North Dakota, one person died and another three were injured.
Your photo and story send a dangerous message to the readers.
Through Operation Lifesaver programs, training and events, millions of people nationwide have learned about rail safety, and needless deaths and injuries were prevented as a result. We hope your paper will take greater care in the future not to undermine this progress.
