Fargo Davies sweeps Fargo North, advances to Class A state volleyball tournament

FARGO – Before this season even started, the Fargo Davies volleyball team wanted 2012 to be a breakout year.

With its state tournament hopes hinging on one match, the Eagles took care of business Saturday.

Davies swept Fargo North 25-21, 25-16, 25-22 in a state-qualifying match during the North Dakota Class A, East Region tournament at Davies High School.

“We came out strong and did what we had to do,” said Davies senior outside hitter Kali Erickson, who transferred to the school this fall. “It is amazing, and I knew that coming here we were going to do it. Now we are going and I’m so excited.”

The victory sends Davies to its first-ever state tournament, set for Nov. 15-17 at Minot State University.

The Eagles (25-11) will be the No. 3 seed from the East and play at 2 p.m. on Thursday in the quarterfinals.

“These girls believed in themselves,” Davies head coach Heather Stuberg said. “This week, coming into the East Region tournament our motto was to believe in yourself and you are halfway there.”

Erickson paced Davies with nine kills and three ace serves.

Junior outside hitter Kinsey Papachek spiked match point for the Eagles, who lost to the Spartans in the state-qualifier round a year ago.

“I was thinking it is just one point away from us going to state,” said Papachek, who totaled seven kills. “We worked hard to get there all year. That was the icing on the cake.”

Davies lost to West Fargo in the quarterfinals, making its last two matches must-wins.

“We knew the battle that we were going to have after losing to West Fargo on Tuesday was going to be immensely tough,” Stuberg said. “To go 3-0 against Fargo North is completely unexpected.

“I think winning the first (set) just gave the girls so much momentum. They weren’t going to let down at all.”

The Packers (20-14) swept Wahpeton 25-21, 25-16, 25-17 in a state-qualifying match.
