Red River defeats Fargo North in East Region volleyball semis
The Roughriders denied Fargo North from completing a comeback in a 25-21, 25-22, 14-25, 25-22 victory during the North Dakota Class A, East Region volleyball tournament at Fargo Davies High School.
Several highlight-reel defensive efforts on consecutive points helped Red River build a 24-20 lead it would not give up in the fourth set.
“I thought we did a good job of serving aggressively,” Red River head coach Carolyn Olson said. “In the end we came up with some key blocks and some defensive plays down the stretch. That was the difference.”
Hadley Steffen paced the Roughriders (21-9) with 19 kills and two blocks.
No. 2-seeded Red River plays top-seeded Fargo Shanley in the championship at 3 p.m. today. Both teams automatically qualify for the state tournament set for Nov. 15-17 at Minot State.
Red River jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but North (30-6) dominated the third set.
North senior and NCAA Division I Nebraska volleyball commit Kira Larson led the Spartans with 16 kills, seven blocks and five ace serves.
Destinee Thorstensen added 10 kills for North.
“We liked the way we played,” North head coach Jerry Daily said. “At times we were really up and played well. Other times we were a little down.
“After being down 2-0, we thought we came back and played very well.”
North plays Fargo Davies in a state-qualifying match at 1 p.m. today.

NORTH: Larson 16-7-5 (14 digs), Bergeron 9-1-0, Thorstensen 10-1-0, Johnson 5-1-0 (20 assists), Schmiess 1-0-0 (22 assists), Fischer 3-0-0, Preston 0-0-1 (18 digs).

Kali Erickson had 18 kills and four ace serves to help Fargo Davies to a 21-25,
25-14, 25-19, 25-18 win over Grand Forks Central in an elimination match during the East Region volleyball tournament on Friday at Davies High School.
Davies (24-11) advances to play in a state-qualifying match at 1 p.m. today.
Kaylyn Selle paced the Knights (12-20) with 10 kills.
CENTRAL (kills-blocks-aces): Selle 10-2-0 (12 digs), Reller 9-4-0, Longtin 7-5-1, Hammer 5-3-1, Burr 2-4-4 (20 digs), Paintner 0-1-4 (27 assists).
DAVIES: Papachek 7-1-2 (18 digs), Erickson 18-2-4 (17 digs), Woodbridge 9-1-0, Olson 4-1-1 (38 assists), Grabarkewitz 5-1-0, Bolstad 8-4-0.
