Bison wrap up home volleyball schedule with victoryFARGO – It was the final home appearance for four North Dakota State seniors, although it wasn’t the volleyball match they were planning to go out on.
The season may have taken a detour, but at least they left Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse on Friday night with a few smiles. The Bison defeated South Dakota State 24-26, 25-22, 27-25, 25-21 in a going-away party for Andrea Henning, Megan Lambertson, Catherine Yager and Brynn Joki.
“The fans are unreal here, and that’s what I’ll miss the most,” Henning said. “Tonight was fun.”
Henning set a school record for four-set digs with 39, breaking her old record of 36. Lambertson and Jenni Fassbender had 18 kills and Joki 17 in a performance NDSU (12-16) wish it consistently had all year.
“We played with the heart and passion we haven’t seen consistently this season,” said head coach Kari Thompson.
The postseason hopes ended on Thursday night when Missouri-Kansas City defeated Nebraska-Omaha. That eliminated any Bison hope of winning a tiebreaker to qualify for the four-team Summit League tournament, which will be held at Bentson Bunker next weekend.
Summit host sites are determined by the previous year’s regular-season champion, which NDSU is. But four losses in their previous six matches heading into Friday derailed hopes of NDSU defending its Summit tourney title.
Still to play is a road match at Pepperdine on Nov. 20 and a tournament at the University of Tulsa (Okla.) in two weeks.
After dropping the first set, the Bison were the clutch team in the following two sets, getting three straight kills with the score tied at 21 in Game 2. They recovered after coming out flat after intermission and the Jacks took advantage with a quick 10-3 lead.
After surviving a set point trailing 25-24, three straight points finishing with an ace from Ariel Listebarger gave them a 2-1 lead.
“Everyone on the team tonight stuck out,” Henning said.
