Fargo Shanley tops West Fargo in East Region volleyball semifinals

FARGO – Timing is key when it comes to blocking in volleyball.

Fargo Shanley took a while to find its block on Friday, but once it did the Deacons were able to seal a victory.

Shanley posted an 18-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-23 win over West Fargo during the semifinals of the North Dakota Class A, East Region tournament at Fargo Davies High School.

With the win, Shanley qualifies for the state tournament set for Nov. 15-17 at Minot State.

“That was our goal to get this one so we can go to state, because that is our ultimate goal,” said sophomore middle blocker Alivia Fraase, who totaled 18 kills in the match.

The top-seeded Deacons (22-8) advance to today’s championship match set for 3 p.m.

West Fargo jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, winning the first set with efficient front-row hitting.

“(West Fargo) ran what they have all year, but they are making better contact and their timing is much better,” said Shanley head coach Curt Johnson. “Our timing on our blocks was not up to speed, and it took us almost that whole first (set) to finally start to catch on.”

The Deacons were credited with 12 blocks. Senior middle blocker Jessica Anderson led the way, collecting six blocks for Shanley.

The fourth set was tight the whole way, with 12 separate points played with both teams tied. With the score 23-23, Fraase slapped an ace serve and Anderson followed with an ace block for match point.

Madison Little and Carly Mickelson each added eight kills for Shanley.

“I thought we passed much better in Sets 2, 3 and 4,” Johnson said. “Our blocking stepped up to slow down their attack. Alivia stepped up huge when we needed her. Madison Little also played well. Those back sets to her really opened up the court.”

West Fargo plays Wahpeton at 11 a.m. today in a state-qualifying match.

Courtney Suppa totaled 15 kills and two ace serves for the Packers (19-14). West Fargo’s Christina Bruenjes and Amanda Levin had 12 and 11 kills, respectively.

“When we control the ball and our back court can pass a nice ball, we have phenomenal hitters,” West Fargo head coach Paula Pierson said. “But to their credit, they did a nice job of getting up on the block a few times on us. They served pretty aggressive, and we had a few runs there where we didn’t control the ball well enough.”

WEST FARGO (kills-blocks-aces): Klug 1-0-0 (40 assists), Bruenjes 12-0-0, Suppa 15-1-2, Gustafson 8-4-0, Woodbury 0-0-0 (10 digs), Jipson 0-0-1, Sand 2-0-0, Levin 11-0-0.
