Grand Forks woman hospitalized after driving into pond

GRAND FORKS - A Grand Forks woman was hospitalized Thursday after her car entered a pond near the Choice fitness center here, according to police.

They did not name the 30-year-old woman and did not know the extent of her injuries after she was taken to Altru Hospital.

She was southbound on South 11th Street around 11 a.m. when her 2008 Saturn hit a light pole in the 3900 block. The car continued to 40th Avenue South, went over a curb and continued three blocks into a field where the pond is. Witnesses said water was up to the top of the car seats and the driver was alone.

Four of the witnesses — Nancy Yoshida, Betsy Henler, Russell Van Dyken and Rene Saucedo — ran to the pond and Saucedo used a rock to break the rear window. They were able to pull the driver to shore and keep her warm with a blanket until emergency personnel arrived.

Police continue to investigate the incident, but believe a medical problem caused the driver to lose control.
