Kindred sweeps Fargo Oak Grove, wins ND Region 1 volleyball title

OAKES, N.D. – Kindred needed a few tries at it, but for the first time ever, the Vikings are headed to the North Dakota Class B state volleyball tournament.

Kindred defeated Fargo Oak Grove 25-22, 25-16, 25-18 in the Region 1 championship match on Thursday at Oakes High School.

When the Vikings got match point on an ace serve by senior setter Casey Allmaras, it set off a celebration many years in the making.

A large group of Kindred fans popped barrels of confetti and stormed the court. Chants of “On to state, on to state” echoed in the gymnasium.

“It is long awaited,” Allmaras said of the victory. “We have been waiting for this for so many years. We have worked so hard for it and put in so many hours. It is just indescribable.”

Kindred (32-10) had lost the previous two Region 1 title matches to Central Cass.

The Vikings advance to play Region 5 champ Flasher at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15 in the quarterfinals of the state tournament at Minot State University.

Senior outside hitter Kellie Schmit paced the Vikings with 21 kills.

“I am so excited,” said Schmit, who was named to the all-tournament team and Region 1 Senior Athlete of the Year “I have been waiting for this ever since I was a freshman. … We finally get to go to state.”

Hannah Kelley led the Grovers (31-7) with 11 kills and a block.

“Their back row played a little bit better than ours, and that was the difference,” Oak Grove head coach Denny Stinar said. “They made some good passes and got some attacks. We went in streaks with that, but when our passing was on our attack was on.

“We didn’t attack enough and gave them too many opportunities.”

Allmaras finished with five kills, three ace serves and 28 assists for the Vikings.

“We served incredibly well,” Kindred head coach Brooks Dockter said. “That put (Oak Grove) on their heels a little bit, and then any time we brought Kellie back up in the front row she put away balls. Our seniors did a fantastic job of playing tough.”
