Fargo Oak Grove, Central Cass sweep first-round Class B, Region 1 volleyball tournament opponents

OAKES, N.D. – After opening with two sub-par sets on Monday, the Fargo Oak Grove volleyball team ended on a roll.

The Grovers swept North Sargent 25-23, 25-21, 25-15 in the quarterfinals of the Class B, Region 1 volleyball tournament at Oakes High School.

Oak Grove (30-6) ended the third set with an 11-1 run to top the Bobcats.

“We started off a little slow, but we came back and we played our best,” said junior middle hitter Hannah Kelley, who finished with eight kills for the Grovers.

The victory sets up a semifinal matchup at 6 p.m. today with Central Cass, which swept Hankinson 25-17, 25-15, 25-17 in the opening match of the tournament.

“That might be the only positive thing we are going to find from that match,” Oak Grove head coach Denny Stinar said of the third set. “I did not think we played well at all. I thought we should have earned a lot more points than we did.”

Sam Kounovsky added six kills for Oak Grove.

Chelsey Anderson paced North Sargent with 12 kills, 14 digs and two ace serves. The Bobcats end the season 18-15.

Defending Class B champions Central Cass (36-5-1) used its dynamic front-row combination of Faith Dooley and Hannah Breske to get past the Pirates.

Dooley totaled 13 kills and two blocks while Breske posted seven kills and three blocks.

“They are hard hitters,” Central Cass head coach Bridget Stowers said of Dooley and Breske. “We need them swinging every night to get our team going.”

Errors kept Hankinson (14-13) from getting on any sizeable runs. Meanwhile, the Squirrels looked right at home in the Oakes gym on Monday, posting six ace serves.

“It is nice to play the first match and get it under our belts,” Stowers said. “It was good to get it done with and get a feel for the gym. It is a great confidence booster.”

Central Cass swept Oak Grove in the lone match during the regular season.

“They are good competition and a good team,” Kelley said of the Squirrels. “We know we have a lot to work hard for.”
