Letter: Forum endorses Rick Berg, then reports his lies

One day (Oct.24), The Forum editorial endorsed Rick Berg over Heidi Heitkamp for U.S. Senate, claiming that there’s no character issue at stake, and neither candidate is “a better North Dakotan or a better American than the other.”

Just four days later (Oct. 28), The Forum printed a story by reporter Mike Nowatzki indicating that Berg has been telling outright falsehoods about the Affordable Care Act.

According to The Forum’s story (“Sorting out Senate race’s claims on Obamacare”), Berg’s lies are real whoppers.

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for many weeks, you’ve probably memorized his three biggest ones, so I’ll just list them here: 1) his

$716 billion from Medicare lie; 2) his bankrupting Medicare lie; and 3) his scary-board-will-ration-care lie (a resurrection of Sarah Palin’s 2009 cock-and-bull story).

With the Oct. 28 headline, you might expect false claims by both candidates to be covered, but the story reports no lies by Heitkamp.

Doesn’t The Forum believe that honesty is essential to good character?

The last thing North Dakota needs is a U.S. senator who can’t even be truthful with the people before heading to Washington. The last thing we need is a politician with no respect for facts and truth.
