Spartans win EDC girls swimming championship

FARGO – It’s a dry spell that Fargo North wants to splash away.

“Yeah, 35 years,” said Spartans senior Emily Roche.

Roche is referring to the last time a team from the Eastern Dakota Conference won the North Dakota state girls swimming and diving meet.

The conference’s senior athlete of the year won the 50-yard freestyle and helped two relay teams to victories as the Spartans captured the EDC championship Saturday at Davies pool.

West Fargo closed the gap to 27 points when junior Danica Dutt anchored a pool-record 200-yard freestyle relay team in the ninth event, but North’s depth shut down any upset bid.

Next, the state meet Friday and Saturday in Bismarck. And trying to end that drought that’s stood for the east since 1977.

Spartans coach Talia Butery knows all too well. She was a standout swimmer for the Spartans, and now as head coach, she’s finished second at state three times.

“We’re just hoping it’s the right time for someone on this side of the state,” Butery said.

North finished second to Bismarck Century last season at state by 14 points.

“That’s all I can think about,” said North senior Tori Meyer, who scored 289.40 points to win the diving competition. “State is at a new pool this year. It’s Bismarck’s home pool. Things could go the same way or it could change.”

It’s not impossible, however. North won the 12-team Bismarck Invitational by 17 points over Century in September.

“I really can’t explain why the west has been able to win so many titles compared to the east,” said first-year Bismarck Century coach Jeff Steele, who coached at three Fargo schools before heading out west.

What North can control is shaving time and polishing dives this week. Junior Maddie Derby, who beat her own pool record Saturday in the 100 backstroke, said the team’s effort was a strong step forward to compete with the west.

“It could be. Anything could happen. Looking now, we have a good chance. I just don’t want to jinx anything,” Derby said.

Sophomore Ellie Roche won two events and helped the Spartans seal the conference title in the 400 free relay. She’s just an example of North’s long lineup.

“Our team’s effort today was good enough for now. We’re expecting to do a lot better next weekend,” Butery said.
